Week 7

This week I have managed to put together all my work together for my proposal as well as for the small exhibition displaying my proposal idea and the work I have presented. 

I took photographs at the Headlands of my completed casts of my chosen objects and I feel these have done justice in terms of what I was aiming for which was for them to stand out and make the area more brighter. Below are the cast images I have took and edited on Adobe Photoshop:

I have also built my display box with my objects and labels to help create a narrative for each object I have found. 

At the beginning of this module I was focusing my project on the fly tipping issue at the Headlands next to the Jewish Cemetry, however now that I have developed it over the past weeks I have discovered more depth into what I am actually doing. In reality, I am reducing art to rubbish and making rubbish in to art by creating these casts and artistically fly tipping  back into the landscape, which shows tat art can be anything, as long as there is an idea behind. I have used white casts to show the ghost of what use to be there, but also to get people to think when they came across them just why is it important, and what sentimental value it may have, creating a narrative for each of these objects. This allows the objects to become more than rubbish, but more like treasures that have been discovered and acknowledge by creating them into art. Putting art instead of rubbish into the landscape which is more pleasant to see, creating a blank canvas in some ways,  but instead more 3d.

Health and Safety
Considering the area I am placing the pieces in, the area is already known to have some factors concerning health and safety, however non of the objects I am creating will have sharp corners on them and will be amongst the landscape.

Terrain
My piece is an intervention piece which means the terrain will not affect the small casts I will be putting in the landscape.

Audience:
The audience m piece focuses on is not really any certain age group but more who takes interest in the area I'm intervening with. My piece could potentially upset certain people however I am making it draw attention to the fly tipping problem as well as placing art rather than rubbish around the surrounding area of the Jewish Cemetry.

Size of structure:
The size of my interventions are 6 to scale plaster casts of the following objects:

• Paintbrush (8cm W, 18cm H)
• Bed spring (11cm W, 16cm H)
• Mattress spring (6cm W, 54cm H)
• Gear pump sign (10cm W, 10cm H)
• Large, rectangle bottle (7cm W, 21cm H)
• Small, cylinder bottle (2cm W, 10cm H)

Expenses:
In order to make my proposal piece I would obviously need to buy materials in order to make it, below are the costs of materials:

• 2 bags of clay to create mould for plaster = £20.00
• 1 bag of plaster = £10.00
• 2 cans of white spray paint = £9.00

Overall cost: £39.00

Week 6

This week I have started making a start on my casts for my proposal piece of the objects I have collected. I have narrowed my main objects down to six which I find the most interesting which is: a gear pump sign; a rectangle bottle; a cylinder bottle; a bed spring; a mattress spring and  a paintbrush.

I have also started painting my box, the inside of it grey and the outside white. The reason I have chosen grey for the inside of the box is because I will be spray painting the actual objects I have found white to simulate the proposal idea in the display box which people will look down into. 

In this display I will have a proposal book which features more drawings, digital drawings, specifications and pin points about what exactly I am proposing and why I am doing it.

Slowly my piece of work is coming together as well as my proposal and I am really proud of the progress I have made.

Week 5

This I have decided to make some test images of just what my casts might look like when I put them back in the landscape I found the original objects from. Below are the images I have produced:

I think these test images have turned out good. They have helped me get some idea as to how my cast will look in the fly tipping site at the Headlands. I will most likely use these test images as part of my proposal to show the building up of this site specific art work I am proposing for this area.

Week 4

This week I have drawn out plans for the display box I am going to make in order to display my objects in for my final piece for this module. I decided to not have a cabinet as I thought the idea of having a box just off the floor to display my objects in will force viewers to look down on the floor into the box which simulates the idea of found objects as well as draw attention to looking at so called 'rubbish' on the floor and viewing them as art instead.

Week 3

This week I have looked at some artists that I think will be relevant to look at considering how I am going to make this piece of work. 

The first artist I looked at is Tracey Emin, particularly her bronze sculptures she made of baby things found around a particular area that was to show the high teen pregnancy rate in that area. I like the idea of making art and reducing it to something that has been abandoned or is just rubbish to other people, making lost things or remnants of objects into actual art. I have had a similar idea of taking objects from the fly tipping site and casting them, and putting the casts of the objects back into the landscape I found them in.

The second artist I looked at is Sophie Calle, but mainly focusing on her 'Birthday Ceremony' series. I like the set up of these as they are all in the same kind of cabinet, displaying objects on the shelves that all have a theme for each cabinet. I like the idea of presenting my objects in such a way, presenting it in a box or cabinet that revolves around one theme.

The third artist I looked at is The Boyle Family. I like the casts of the bits of road which I find interesting as it looks as if they are tracking certain places by casting the floor of it, which in some ways can be seen to be similar to my idea interns of how I am casting the actual object on top of it rather than the floor/terrain it was found upon, which kind of has the same 'tracking' element as some of the Boyle Family's work.

The fourth and last artist I looked at is artist duo Fischli and Weiss. I like their work as it is misleading, and questions the importance of objects that may not be considered as 'art'. I like this idea and I can see some of these thoughts being seen in my work for this module as I am questioning the importance of objects by taking rubbish and turning it into art, then making casts of this rubbish I have found (cast = art) and then artistically fly tipping the casts bad into the landscape reducing them to rubbish, which can be seen as misleading when the cast are discovered in the landscape. 

Week 2

This week we have been making some armatures of a life model to make sculptures from. Below are my pictures of the three armatures I have made:

After that, the next day we had started sculpting the life model using clay. This experience was new to me but I preferred this method of 'drawing' the life model rather than using 2D as I was able to sculpt more precise to the model, allowing more freedom in this workshop. Week 1

This week I have gathered up objects for my site specific sculpture which I have to come up with a proposal for, for this module. After gathering various objects from around the Headlands near the Jewish cemetery I found some certain specific ones that were the most interesting:

I then came up with an idea that I think I will certainly develop. I have decided to collect more objects like these, like an archaeological dig in some ways, and cast these objects, putting them back in the landscape I found them from, making an intervention with the surroundings. I am them going to add tags, or aerial codes to them and write them down in a book, to mark out where these objects are, so that they can be found in real life. After I do that, the real objects I have found will be displayed with the book in a cabinet to show what has been collected etc. 

I really like the sound of this idea and hopefully it will work put successfully.
